<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Search major search engines for keywords such as &#8220;gift basket business&#8221; and &#8220;how to start a gift basket  business&#8221;. But go deeper and search for gift basket books, magazines, newsletters, associations, conferences and classes.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Learn from others who have already operated businesses and have written articles, blogs, and books with loads of information. Every question you could possibly ask has probably been answered somewhere.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Once you&#8217;ve explored the Internet, do a local search.   Get acquainted with the other gift basket sellers in your area. Explore  creative ways to sell gift baskets in places such as eBay, craft fairs,  and conferences.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Next, look to see which retailers are offering them as part of their inventory, such as grocery stores, florists, department stores, specialty stores and coffee shops. You may be able to partner with retailers, providing the gift baskets they need. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>2. Test for demand.</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">The  fastest way to make money in any industry is discover an unmet demand. Find out who is  looking for what you offer and are having trouble finding it.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">One popular theme that is being sought by many gift buyers, for example,  are baskets made up of licensed  sports team items. If this group of buyers is in your local area, your  chances  of success are great if you promote energetically..</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">But even if these ready buyers are not in your local area, you still can profit from  their hunger for these custom designs by setting up and promoting them on your website.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>3. Find customers first, buy inventory second.</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Many beginners do this backwards. They get mesmerized by the alluring gifts and delicious gourmet food at trade shows and lured into ordering cases of <a href="http://clicks.aweber.com/y/ct/?l=76EHw&amp;m=1fRsPiahXBh8K1&amp;b=xsyoPNT7kgRL4IKLR20.hQ" target="_blank">food</a>, <a href="http://clicks.aweber.com/y/ct/?l=76EHw&amp;m=1fRsPiahXBh8K1&amp;b=JVFYT3j.x.cEG2V45hgLEA" target="_blank">supplies</a> and stocking equipment. Then they frantically search for customers to buy what they have in stock.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">If you want to earn profits, approach your<a href="http://clicks.aweber.com/y/ct/?l=76EHw&amp;m=1fRsPiahXBh8K1&amp;b=wLagCFbvtwD5oFDdhb0coQ" target="_blank"> potential customers</a> first. Your first contact with them is continuation of your research. Find out what types of occasions they celebrate. Then ask what  gifts they buy for these celebrations. This information is gold. It can  help you plan.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Your  friends and family will be your initial contacts, but to prosper you will need to find customers on and offline. And remember, at first you&#8217;re trying to get a sense of how they shop for  gifts, and what price points convert them into spending customers.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Since  businesses buy more gifts than individuals, find the companies who would make ideal clients for you by attending your local chamber, business networks and hospitality and convention bureau.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Use  the information you gathered in your research to create tip sheets, a newsletter and other shopping guidance for your potential customers. <p><span style="font-size: medium;">When you collect business cards, follow up with phone calls or email within 3 days of meeting new colleagues.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>5. Nourish the support you have to create a successful business. </strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Cultivate your relationships and rally the support of your family.</span></p>

<p>You know what a wannabe is, right?</p>
<p>It&#8217;s someone who pretends they belong to a certain group, but don&#8217;t. According to the State Board of Equalization, if you aren&#8217;t earning a profit you are operating a hobby, not a business.</p>
<p>A wannabe is also someone who imitates the stars of a group but hasn&#8217;t found his own style and brand.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re not sure whether or not you are a business wannabe, here&#8217;s a short checklist.</p>
<p>A wannabe does not have</p>
<p>* a<a href="http://www.thegiftbasketlibrary.com/Getting%20Started/namingyourcompany1.html"> business name </a><br />
* a business card<br />
* a business license<br />
* a seller&#8217;s permit<br />
* a<a href="http://www.thegiftbasketlibrary.com/Getting%20Started/websitestart.html"> website</a><br />
* a way to <a href="http://www.thegiftbasketlibrary.com/Getting%20Started/websitestart.html">accept credit card payments</a></p>
<p>Some of you are probably chuckling and feeling quite confident that you do not fall into the wannabe category.</p>
<p>But let&#8217;s look a little deeper at some other telltale signs of a business wannabe.</p>
<p>A business wannabe also does not</p>
<p>* network in-person or online regularly to build business relationships<br />
* have a business plan<br />
* have a <a href="http://www.thegiftbasketlibrary.com/salesmarketing/babyboomers.html">target market</a><br />
* promote business regularly to her target market<br />
* stay in touch with current clients<br />
* keep current on <a href="http://www.giftbasketfoodsupplies.com/fancyfoodshow2011.htm">trends in the industry</a><br />
* have a <a href="http://www.thegiftbasketlibrary.com/salesmarketing/branding.html">distinctive style or niche</a><br />
* earn profits</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t hear as much chuckling as before.</p>
<p>But don&#8217;t despair if you found yourself gasping as you read the points in the second set of wannabe traits.</p>
<p>If you just want to dabble in the gift basket business making a few designs here and there for friends and maybe selling some on occasion, that&#8217;s okay. Just remember that as a hobbyist the State Board of Equalization won&#8217;t allow you to purchase wholesale, and you will jeopardize your chances of getting into trade shows since you won&#8217;t have a permit or license.</p>
<p>If you entered the business rather timidly, but are ready to leave your wannabe days behind, it&#8217;s easy enough to get serious about your business.</p>
<p>Look back at the things that wannabes do not have, and make sure you have those things in place.</p>
<p>One thing that helps many successful gift basket retailers become and remain profitable is finding an underserved niche and serving it. That&#8217;s what Susan Seaman, of Glyndon, MD did when she decided to open a regional gift basket shop offering all Maryland-themed products.</p>
<p>If you think that her business is therefore limited to customers in only one state you are wrong.</p>

I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;re no exception.    In the last century this would mean  placing ads in magazines and newspapers  hoping that your prospective  customers would find you. With the advent of the Internet and social  media, in particular, promoting your business is easier and more  affordable than ever.</p>
<p>Here are three ways to promote your business that are very affordable and most important, effective.</p>
<p><strong>1. Capture the contact information of every visitor to your website. </strong></p>
<p><strong></strong> Offer them a tip sheet or special  report as an incentive to give them an immediate reward for signing up.  Then on a regular schedule, whether weekly or monthly, send your  subscribers a newsletter of tips along with announcements of your  specials.    Having access to your customers and  potential customers on a regular basis is the most effective way to get  and keep them buying from you.   Your objective is to build a  relationship with your subscribers by offering them information of  value. You will educate them about your product along the way, of  course, but never hit them on the head with sales appeals.</p>
<p>This weekly newsletter is an example  of how I have stayed in touch with you since 2003 when it began.  Each  issue has useful tips and actionable steps that help you locate  products, avoid mistakes, market your business, improve designs and  increase profits.    Whenever  I announce a new website,  report, class or other idea that will benefit you, I can easily get it  to your emailbox. <p><strong>2. Set up accounts on Twitter and Facebook and make a plan to post on a regular basis to both. </strong></p>
<p><strong></strong> <strong> </strong> Many people have decided that being  active on social media is too much trouble. As a business person you  cannot afford to take this viewpoint. Social media is free exposure for  you, so why would you neglect to take advantage of it.   There are thousands of social media sites, but I suggest you start with these two most popular ones.  <strong> </strong></p>
<p>Twitter was started in 2006 by Evan Williams, Biz Stone and Jack Dorsey to send and  receive short messages. Using the 144 character limit many business owners announce  sales, offer tips and even direct readers to useful tips and articles on  various blogs and websites.    Avoid using social media for blatant self-promotion. The key is to give before you ask folks to buy.</p>
<p>Facebook was started in 1994 by former-Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg (while at Harvard) who ran it as one of his hobby projects with some financial help from Eduardo Saverin. It was created for Harvard students only, but soon spread to other schools, and eventually to the rest of us.   As  a business owner you will want to set up a Facebook page in addition to  your personal profile. That way you can promote your business and get  regular visitors who are interested in your service.</p>
<p>On your  Facebook page you want to link your Twitter and blog so that whatever  you do on one appears on the other. Facebook also allows you to post  messages in the news feed and photos.   As with all  social media, your goal is to build relationships. The more you offer  useful information, the more folk will follow you and share what you  post with others.</p>
<p><strong>3. Create teleseminars, podcasts, videos and interviews where you can showcase the benefits of doing business with your company.</strong></p>
<p><strong> </strong> The wide  availability of free and low-cost conference call lines, cameras and  other recording methods has made it easier than ever to offer your own  online class or message or promotion.   As with the  other types of media, your main goal must still be to build  relationships and offer information.</p>

<p>Studying the competition is an important part of planning your business, but not for the reason some may think. What your business does differently or better is what is important. What benefit of your service will make a powerful marketing message?</p>
<p>Costco is not your competition. Costco is a warehouse store that sells gift baskets seasonally at extremely low prices as a convenience to their customers.They have a different target audience than you have.   You are going after customers who put a high value on quality, customization and want the personalized service that you offer.</p>
<p>Your job is to find your target audience and zero in on them.    Even companies who are going after the same target market must find their own distinctive marketing messages if they want to succeed.</p>
<p>In the car rental business, for example, Hertz commercials boasted they were number one. Realizing they were number two, Avis used the &#8220;We try harder&#8221; slogan to convince us that we get better service from their superior effort.</p>
<p>Then while the major car rental car companies were built on renting new cars, Rent-A-Wreck changed the auto rental industry by being the first to rent used cars, thereby appealing to folks who were willing to give up glamour in exchange for lower rental car fees.</p>
<p>At one time ads for office supplies were pretty dry fare directed at business offices. Then one year Staples used a classic <a href="http://clicks.aweber.com/y/ct/?l=IGEMR&amp;m=1ZWBhQ9zoBh8K1&amp;b=yFUrT16Gknidr.9_8DK44A" target="_blank">Christmas song as the theme</a> for a back to school commercial and broadened their target market to include all of us, and changed how we viewed office supplies.</p>
<p>Instead of lamenting about how many gift baskets you saw being wheeled out of Costco this holiday season, why not get busy finding your niche, locating your target market and zeroing in on them with a winning marketing message.</p>

<p>A subscriber recently emailed me asking for sources for Afrocentric gift items for her holiday gift baskets. Only a few sources came to mind at first. Then I got an idea.</p>

<p>Websites should give information and help meet customers needs, but if your website is not creating orders and earning the profits you expect and need, it sucks!   There are five primary reasons your website may fall into the &#8220;suck&#8221; category and I cover all of them on this week&#8217;s<a href="http://clicks.aweber.com/y/ct/?l=Fty_F&amp;m=1b_LzegMrBh8K1&amp;b=j47KDHqiqHhGrdgn_Xus9A" target="_blank"> blog posts</a>. Here is the short version. You can read the full versions each day this week.   Reasons your website sucks:</p>
<h4><a href="http://clicks.aweber.com/y/ct/?l=Fty_F&amp;m=1b_LzegMrBh8K1&amp;b=j47KDHqiqHhGrdgn_Xus9A" target="_blank">1. Your website makes me nervous so I don&#8217;t feel at ease ordering from you.</a></h4>
<p>Many gift basket designers focus on finding the right products, creating dazzling designs and posting photos of their designs on their websites. While these are important, they do you no good if your potential customers are uneasy about doing business with you.    What makes them uneasy?   No contact information on your Contact Us, no information about your background on your About Us page, no Privacy Policy and more.  </p>
<h4>2<a href="http://clicks.aweber.com/y/ct/?l=Fty_F&amp;m=1b_LzegMrBh8K1&amp;b=j47KDHqiqHhGrdgn_Xus9A" target="_blank">. Your website design is unprofessional and inappropriate for the service you offer. </a></h4>
<p>While it&#8217;s perfectly acceptable for your designs to be dazzling, it&#8217;s distracting and tacky for your website to sport garish colors, flashing emoticons and music. And that&#8217;s not all. </p>
<h4><a href="http://clicks.aweber.com/y/ct/?l=Fty_F&amp;m=1b_LzegMrBh8K1&amp;b=j47KDHqiqHhGrdgn_Xus9A" target="_blank">3. You are letting your website visitors  come and go without capturing their names. </a></h4>
<p>How many people visited your website today? If you had analytical code embedded you would know the answer to this question.</p>
<p>But more important, who are the people who visited your website today? You don&#8217;t know. Find out how you can capture the names of the visitors to your site, and why.</p>

<p>Are you getting the word out about your website, the benefits of doing business with you, and more? Word-of-mouth is still very effective, but with social networking you can reach much farther and wider than ever before.</p>

<p>Many consider summer a time when sales slump, but that doesn&#8217;t have to be true for you. There are many sales opportunities in the summer, and one way to capture them is to use miniature or travel-size products.</p>
<p>As soon as high school graduation caps are flung high into the sky in celebration, it&#8217;s time to start packing for college. Many students will leave home to live in dorms or apartments and will be discovering for the first time that clothes don&#8217;t wash themselves and dinner doesn&#8217;t materialize in the oven. A gift basket filled with travel-size products will serve them well during orientation week until they have to make the big leap to actually shop for the full-size versions.</p>
<p>College care gift baskets can be used as welcome to the new student on campus, but also throughout the semester to encourage students during exams or remind them of their family when they can&#8217;t return home for the holidays. When sent during the semester, use snack foods and energy drinks.</p>
<p>Bon voyage gifts are welcomed by travelers since personal care and hygiene products are not always convenient and easy to attain around the world. If the travelers are on honeymoon they&#8217;ll not want to squander their time shopping for toiletries and cleaning products. Use travel-size items, empty plastic containers that can be filled with their favorites, and nonperishable snacks to create a thoughtful gift.</p>
<p>In addition to travel-size items, consider easy-to-carry and useful gifts such as leather luggage tags, money belts, rain gear, eye masks, collapsible binoculars, camera memory cards, neck pillow and first aid kit.</p>
